Hello Y'all!
I'm here with a quick post today about a sweet little sign I recently made. It was a total spur of the moment thing. I was cleaning the garage and found this old piece of a fence -- so old it was from our last house --- but I sanded it down and set it aside for a couple days.
I have not done much Fall decorating yet. So I decided I had to do something….
It was nap time and I got this all done in less than 20 minutes! I went to the computer and googled "witch silhouette". I picked out one I liked and printed it. I had to print it twice to get it the size I needed for my wood. Once I printed it I placed it on the slider door and outlined it in pencil (you can read all about the transfer method here).
Then I turned it over and rubbed all over to transfer the pencil lines onto my wood.
Next I got a small brush, some black latex paint, and painted in the lines.
To hang it I got some jute and knotted the ends. I used a staple gun to attach it to the top of the wood. You could probably use a glue gun, this is so light. (It is hard to see the jute in the photos)
I added some raffia to the ends just because I liked it.
Then I hung it on my entry table light because I like that it is up high since the witch is flying. It should not be sitting, but in the air!
You can see a little peek of a future project - more wainscoting - I have only done the painting so far….
My 9 year old did the ghosts, pumpkin and "Boo" in my chalkboard frame (it started out life at my home as an easter bunny - you can see how I made it here).
And that is that. I had all the supplies and it took me no time at all. If you don't hoard scrap wood like me - you could always go to Lowes or Home Depot to the bin of wood that is scrap and cut a small piece of one you like. They usually have a hand saw right at the bin.
Hopefully I will get out all my decorations soon. It is still hot in the South and it really does not get me in the Fall mood. This time of year I am really missing a New England Fall.
Happy Crafting!

Laundry Room Sign
Sports started this weekend for my boys. I am so excited for it to start, but no more lazy Saturdays! We have to get going and get out of the house kinda early. Now hopefully some cooler weather will follow....it is still too hot in the South.
Today I am sharing a sign I made for my laundry room. I have A LOT of work to do in the laundry room, but that will have to wait. I have other things on my list first! However, I did have this painted wooden sign that was in my last home's bathroom. You can see it here.
I wanted to hang it in the laundry room and paint some words on it. This is how it turned out.
Some days does it feel like that is ALL you do? Never ending laundry.....
Do you want to see how I did it? It was easy and I used my favorite transfer method that I show in detail here.
After deciding on a Font and size, using Microsoft Word, I took the paper with the letters and traced on the back side around the outside of the letters. Then I carefully placed it on the front of the wood. ** This is the hardest part, getting it straight and lined up***. Next you just rub all over and it will transfer the lead to the wood sign. Like this...
After all the words are transferred, I got a small paint brush and some black paint and turned on DIY network and started filling in the letters. This is what it looked like after one coat. Thank goodness that is all it needed.
I just worked around all the imperfections in the wood, including a big knot! In keeping with the worn look, I decided to give the words a light sanding. Then I sprayed a clear coat over it to protect the letters (the sign had been waxed prior).
Then I put some hardware on the back.....
.....and hung it on the wall.
THE END! Someday I will complete the entire laundry room!
Thank you for reading about my project and please come back again!

Boys Bathroom Sign (a reminder...)
Is everyone busy busy busy getting ready for Christmas, parties and travel?
Me too. I love this time of year!!!
Today I have a quick project that has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas. I made another sign. I was painting the base of my $2.99 cane stools and thought that the grey I was using would be great on a sign. I had one last piece of pre-cut Poplar craft board from Home Depot that I wanted to make into something. I did not want to waste paint on my paintbrush (does that surprise you???) so I grabbed the board and started painting.
I decided I wanted a sign for my boys new bathroom. I decided on "Wash Your Hands". Wonder why?!?!
My boys came up with a few more ideas including; Flush and Lid UP then down. If you have boys.....then you know why all these are important!

Here is how I did it:
I used the transfer method that I show on my Tooth Fairy Sign Tutorial (here is a picture from that post).
Then I painted in the lines with my tiny bottle of sample size of BM paint. I did 2 coats.
I also did a dot pattern on the ends - just because. It is very easy to make dots. Just turn your paint brush around and dip the small wooden tip in the paint and dot it on the wood. That's It. Perfect little dot every time.
When everything was dry I used 2 different waxes and kind of mixed them together. I did not want to use too much of the antiquing wax because I did not want the letters to get too "dirty" or the sign to get too brown either.
I think when I hang it I will staple twine around the board and hang it from that. I will show pictures once it is hanging in the bathroom....we have to move first for that to happen!
Thanks for reading today and come back again please!

God Bless Our Home
I had some extra time here and there this week so I decided to make a new sign. I want to put this in our new home and wanted it to be ready for move in day....whenever that may be.
I used plain wood pieces that I bought at Home Depot that do not need to be cut. I just needed to give it a light sanding. I used one of these boards for my Welcome sign that I made for a friend.
This is my finished sign.
These are the steps I took to make it:
1. Sand board and paint it with base coat. Both my boys helped me with this! I used a Benjamin Moore sample size can in Edgecomb Grey.
2. Print out words, I used Microsoft Word in a font that I liked. Then I used the transfer method to get it to the board. First I held it up to a car window (while the boys were playing in the driveway) and traced on the back side with a pencil. Then I turned it over and - after lining up all words to make sure everything fit - I rubbed over the words with the side of the pencil. You do this over the printed side of the paper. Click here to see more details with photos on my transfer method. When you are done, this is what your board will look like.
3. Paint with small brushes in the pencil lines. I used Black Iron, another BM color that I used on my black door. I have at least 2 sample cans of this. I used 2 different sized brushes for these letters. I am left handed so I always paint right to left so I don't smudge the wet paint as I go! I did 2 coats of black.
4. I wanted to paint a black edge around the entire sign. I used blue tape for this. I also painted all the edges. The next photo shows what happens when you are careless about pressing down the edges.
Here is the difference of how edges look with tape that is pressed down, and tape that is not.
I had to go back with the grey paint to fix all the edges..... a lot of fixing for what would have taken me 20 seconds to do before painting....
5. After everything was dry, I waxed it with MMS Antiquing Wax, but ended up rubbing most off because it made it look too dirty for me. Then I used my regular MinWax over it and buffed the whole sign.
I really love how it turned out and can't wait to find the perfect spot for it in our new home.
Thank you for reading and have a Blessed Day!

Another Welcome Sign
I love making signs!
It is just so simple and so easy! Even with my limited resources and with things all over; in PODS, and in storage garages....it is still easy and only requires minimal supplies and a little patience.

This sign was made for a friend who moved into a new home. I was unable to use my large scrap wood pile and had to buy wood at Home Depot. I did not want to make any (or many) cuts, because I only know where my compound miter saw is. I found these pieces of wood - called "craft wood" - in a box in the wood section. I bought a few different sizes and went home and sanded one. They were less than $2 each.
Then I stained it in Minwax. This is the can I used.
I just used one coat of it and applied it with a foam brush. I did not even wipe it off because I did not have a rag!
I usually use the transfer method that I detail on my Tooth Fairy Sign post, but I was feelinglazy tired lazy lets just go with tired, that sounds better! Anyways, I was reading one of my favorite blogs, That's My Letter, and Jaime had a tutorial on that showed how she uses another method (that she uses a lot). I figured that my wood was soft enough for this to work. It did work, but I had a hard time doing it. Maybe I did not press hard enough........ I had to have it in really bright light to see the indent. Maybe that is why the first "e" is a little off......I missed the indent and painted above it. Oh well. Makes it an original!
After painting inside and on my indented lines with a sample of Benjamin Moore white paint and a small craft brush, this is what it looked like.
Nice, but I needed a little more to it. So I free handed a little design around the edge. Like I did on my $4 table here.
Then I applied wax to the entire piece. I used regular wax and some of Miss Mustard Seeds antiquing wax. After it dried and I buffed it I put eye hooks in the top and braided 3 strands of jute to make a larger diameter string for it to hang with.
I just love the way it turned out!

Painted Rustic Wooden Flag

July 4th is my most favorite holiday of the year. It is a non-gift giving day where we celebrate our great nation and it's Independence and get together with family and friends. In my very tiny humble opinion, there is no place like New England for July 4th Celebrations. Nothing fancy or elaborate but everyone has a BBQ or party to throw or attend, and the night always ends with fireworks by the water. The day usually involves games, the beach, water sports, sitting around and talking, sparklers, food, badminton, bocce ball, horse shoes and of course some beverages! Ever since moving away I try to make it home for this holiday but it does not always happen. I try to make the best of it where ever I am, but the vibe and the feeling from the entire community and town is just not the same as it is in my home town.
Now, I am sure there are other parts of the country that have their own traditions and have awesome celebrations too. This is just my observations based on 2 locations only!
I have been wanting to make another sign lately and July 4th has been on my mind. When I don't make things for a while I get cranky and irritable..... So today, the boys were watching a movie because they had been playing outside and it is way to hot out for all day play. I decided not to watch Despicable Me and I went into the garage and found a scrap piece of cedar from an old fence we removed. I had to use that size because my garage is a complete mess and I was not about to get a saw set up.
This is my ugly board, complete with dirt and grass stuck to it... It has a total transformation in about 30 minutes.

So, I sanded my board and then brushed it off. I measured it and it was just over 5" wide. Perfect, 5 stripes just over 1" with red, white, red, white and red. I marked it off with painters tape and got out an old can of red milk paint that was from my kitchen island project. I used a foam brush because that is what was handy, and dry brushed it on.
This shows a few steps.

Here are all 3 stripes in red. I left a spot for the blue area just based on how I thought it would look. Not really measuring, just eyeballing it.
By the last picture above, you see where I am going with this? Right?
After letting the red dry slightly I did the same for the white stripes, using a small sample can of BM paint in Snowfall White. I used that on my kitchen cabinets too.

The blue area I dry brushed in the only dark blue I had, leftover from the boys headboard project.

The stars I did by hand, just placing them where I thought they would look good and using a small craft brush. They are not technical stars - more like starfish - but they were fast and easy to do!

I like it leaning on the wall and may just leave it there. I had origianlly planned to put eye hooks in the top and hang it somewhere. Maybe I'll make another sign for that!

Welcome Sign
I guess I like signs! I didn't realize how many I have made. I have posted about the Guest Cottage sign, the Longitude/Latitude sign, the Tooth Fairy sign and now this sign. I also have several more that I love that I have not posted about.
I guess I love them because they are easy to make and I usually don't need to go to the store for anything. I can personalize them for whomever I want to give a gift to, and who doesn't love to get a personalized handmade gift?
This sign was made for my sister in law when she moved into a new home. I picked the colors to go with her beachy decor.
The wood was a leftover piece of old fence board.
I painted the wood Dolphin's Cove by BM. Then I dry brushed a grey over that. I also dry brushed white over that. I just kept going until it was the look I was going for. Once my paint was done and dry I had to decide on my lettering.
I picked my font and printed out my letters on paper and then transferred them to the sign. I show pictures of the way I transfer images in my Tooth Fairy sign post.
I searched for an object to put on either side and finally came up with the seahorse shape. It was one of the shapes on a Cricut cartridge. I simply cut it out with my Cricut to the correct size and then traced around the cutout onto the sign.
Once everything was in pencil I started painting my seahorses and letters. I did 2 coats. I sealed it with wax and buffed it. I love the soft shine that buffed wax gives. It is so soft and pretty.
I put 2 tiny eye hooks in the top and screwed them in. Then took 3 strands of jute/string and braided them. I thought this sign may be outside (under a roof) and wanted the string to hold up to the weather. I did not have any thicker string and thought this would give it good texture and hold up well.
Sorry I don't have any during photos. However, I thought it was too cute not to share!
Thanks for visiting me today!
